Some times server ports fail, they are ether closed or temporarily out of service due to many number of issues. Some reasons are very involved. But this quick check will at least point you in the right direction, before you submit a support ticket only to find the offending issue was on your side of the computer or network. So first things first in our order.
Using a windows operating system quick port check. It is assumed you have a working knowledge of windows and your applications functions and features.
- Can't send or receive ANY emails. Note the word ANY at all. Check the servers mail ports to see if they are working. In windows Go to START> RUN> Type CMD in the box and click OK> In the command line where the cursor is blinking, type "telnet", then a "SPACE"> then the IP address of your email server, ie, "199.27.13.127" > then a "SPACE"> then the port number you want to check on, ie, "25" or "26" or "110". Each port number has a different function to email sending or receiving. See your softwares application help files for more information on ports and usage. But normally outgoing email is sent by the SMTP that is ether, port 25, 26 or in some other cases 463, 465. The receive port is usually 110 for a POP3 type usage. Consult with your ISP for other ports that are specific to there company's email use. If the port is open and working you will get a blank screen than some sort of warning or information from the server. If it is not working or open, you will get a reason (CODE) of failure. This code can lead you to a better specific issue, where and why. You can use the INTERNET to find out the error codes and what they mean.
- Can't download any thing from your servers location.
